Carus Care takes its name from the Latin word carus, meaning dear, cherished, and valued. It reflects the focus of the work itself: supporting decisions made for people who matter deeply, and treating those decisions with care and respect.

Founded by Melanie (Mel) Steenkamp, RN, Carus Care grew out of years spent guiding families through senior care decisions. Over time, it became clear how difficult the process can be to navigate: too many options, too little clear guidance, and pressure layered onto already complex situations.

The goal was a clearer, more practical approach grounded in real-world experience. Carus Care reflects that approach through plain-language resources, practical tools, and guidance designed to support thoughtful decision-making.
